Hostworks Solution
Automation helps bring Elastic (Cloud) Computing infrastructure to market
In late 2008, Hostworks entered into a program of automation. In order to support future growth and expansion, Hostworks identified the need to implement automation to stay on top of the technology curve. More importantly, automation would deliver flexibility, agility and accountability required to active competitive differentiation in the marketplace.
Hostworks uses automation as the foundation of our “utility computing” offering, rapidly deploying additional environments as demand grows. One of the unique ways in which Hostworks has benefited from automation is with the launch and delivery of its elastic (cloud) computing on-demand platform that supports the requirements of our customers. It provides:
- Single services view across hybrid cloud
- Multi-hypervisor, multi-OS, heterogeneous infrastructure
- Intelligent automation and orchestration
- Rapid application and infrastructure deployment
Introducing the Hostworks Elastic (Cloud) Computing Platform
Traditionally large online platforms are delivered through a farm of dedicated hardware, which can be time consuming to deploy, very expensive and offer limited capacity. To counter these barriers, Hostworks created a cost-effective solution called Elastic (Cloud) Compute Infrastructure that can rapidly scale up and down without affecting resources. This means:
- Environments can be made readily available to customers, allowing early testing and proving, hence minimising risk
- Elastic (cloud) negates the need for capital outlay, as the customer only pays for what they use
- Removes limitation of capacity, delivering the required capacity no matter how popular an event may be
Elastic (cloud) caters for unprecedented demand for hosting by having the ability to rapidly deploy additional environments as demand grows and scale back as needed. The solution helps Hostworks automate much of the system management and keep tight control of the computing environment.
‘Our whole company lives and breathes Service Level Agreements (SLAs). However, we find that there are varied definitions of SLAs in the industry. We define ours very clearly and very precisely – it’s what we are known for. We don’t measure the actual availability of the technology or the system per se – we measure it in terms of the user experience, which we believe is far more important. That way, we can align Hostworks’ service delivery with service excellence at the user level.” Adrian Britton, General Manager, Technology, Strategy and Innovation
Hostworks adheres to the Gartner definition of cloud computing: “computing where massively scalable IT-enabled capabilities are delivered ‘as a service’ to external customers using internet technologies.”
