17 Feb Tour Down Under keeps on rolling…this year to bigger, more global audiences
The Tour Down Under rolls into South Australia every year in January and officially kicks off the UCI WorldTour. As the biggest road cycling race in the southern hemisphere, it attracts nearly 800,000 spectators on the ground every year, but this time round, they weren’t the only roadies’ enjoying the race.
Ex-Olympian and Tour Down Under race director, Mike Turner says “this race brings people together”, and in 2015, this statement was even truer. Thanks to some pretty crafty behind the scenes support from the SA’s own digital roadies (Hostworks), the Tour Down Under was able to reach an entirely new, and bigger, audience via live streaming. Individuals as far as Canada and France were amongst the 28,000 unique viewing sessions during the six Stages of the race, consuming more than 45.00 hours of footage via the Subaru Tour Tracker App.
The really exciting part about this year’s event for Hostworks was demonstrating to cycling lovers across the globe just how easy and engaging it is to live stream sporting events, no matter their location. Imagine having at your fingertips on up-to-the minute coverage, and first hand statistics about your favourite athletes and teams on your smartphone!
Beaming from SA, Hostworks was responsible for taking and transcoding the live broadcast (satellite) stream into multiple bit rates (across all mobile interfaces), and pushing the content out to any mobile devices, via the Hostworks CDN. Avid cycling fans had access to a quality stream of real-time tracking, live text commentary, race standings, stage overviews and photos resulting in hundreds of downloads and streaming sessions. In only the first Stage of the Tour Down Under, sponsored by Hostworks, more than 800 concurrent streams were viewed, and thousands more were recorded over the additional five Stages.
In an event first, audiences were able to participate throughout all stages of the event regardless whether they were cheering their favourite cyclist onsite or from the comfort of their home. Team Hostworks was there, behind the scenes, ensuring audiences everywhere were able to experience the tour alongside the pros and legendary cycling commentator, Phil Liggett, with picture prefect coverage of every pedal stroke.
The Tour Down Under remains one of South Australia’s biggest tourism drawcards throughout the year, and despite having just wrapped up, preparations are already being made to grow the event’s profile internationally as well as at home. Next year’s race will precede the 2016 Olympic Games, and the whole world will be watching the best cyclists from across the globe even closer.
For the best seat in the house, you just need your smartphone and Hostworks live streaming!
